Carlos Beltran Makes Puerto Rico Proud

Carlos Beltran hit his 14th postseason home run on Sunday, making him Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in hitting and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) during postseason play.  During his playoff career, Beltran has slammed one home run for every 7.7 at-bats.  The records he recently broke belong to Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

How Do U.S. Textbooks Portray Puerto Rico?

In 1983, the Coalition for Human and Civil Right Advocates studied the portrayal of Puerto Rico in U.S. textbooks and found that:

The authors of these textbooks, both old and new, appear to have read exactly the same sources and books. Their accounts, offering minimal and generally misleading information, are virtually identical in every case.

And in every case, their presentation of the facts came from an Anglo perspective that reduces Puerto Rican history to little more than a footnote in the “pageant” of U.S. history. CRS Report Prepares Congress for Plebiscite

U.S. Labor Department Announces $1.4 Million Grant for Puerto Rico

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced grants to 30 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands for Unemployment Insurance (UI) program integrity, performance and system improvement projects. Foreign Taxation in Puerto Rico

A United States Senate subcommittee investigating U.S. companies that shelter overseas profits from taxation has found that Microsoft withheld up to $4.5 billion in federal taxes from 2009 to 2011 by transferring profits to a Puerto Rican subsidiary.
