Witnesses Announced for Senate Hearing on Puerto Rico Status

The Senate hearing scheduled for June 18 has been postponed.

The United States Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests announced today its witnesses for a hearing on Puerto Rico status scheduled for Tuesday, June 18th at 2:30 pm EST. The hearing will cover two Senate proposals to determine a permanent policy status for Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico’s current status as a U.S. territory has received increased attention for its undemocratic arrangement.  Senators will be considering proposals to transition Puerto Rico towards democracy either through statehood or independence, possibly with an option of free association.

The witnesses will be:

  • The Honorable Pedro R. Pierluisi, Governor, Puerto Rico
  • The Honorable Juan Manuel Dalmau Ramirez, Secretary General, Puerto Rico Independence Party
  • Mr. Pablo Jose Hernandez Rivera, Secretary of Federal Affairs, Popular Democratic Party
  • Dr. Rafael Cox Alomar, Professor of Law, David A. Clarke School of Law
  • Mr. Jeff Arkin, Director, Strategic Issues, Government Accountability Office (GAO)

The hearing will be webcast live on the Committee’s website, and an archived video will be available shortly after the hearing concludes.
