President Trump made a clear statement yesterday about his concerns with making Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia (D.C.) states.
Writing on Truth Social, the President stated:
“If Senate Republicans don’t TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, the Dumocrats will, and I will be, despite how well our Party is doing, the last Republican President! The Dumocrats will vote in Puerto Rico (4% Republican Vote), and Washington, D.C. (3% Republican Vote), pick up 4 Senators, 8 Congressmen/women, tremendous numbers of Popular and Electoral College Votes and, importantly, control the Voting Mechanisms and Systems, both Legal and otherwise, throughout the United States. It will be impossible for Republicans to ever win an Election again. In other words, it will be THE END OF AMERICA! Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Today, Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE), who is retiring after the current session of Congress and not facing reelection in November countered:
“Puerto Rico now has a Republican Governor and has frequently elected Republicans up and down ballot. There’s a large pro-life presence.”
In his statement, Rep. Bacon was referring to current Puerto Rican Governor Jenniffer González-Colón (R), while also alluding to former Resident Commissioner and Governor Luis Fortuno (R) among other Republican Puerto Rico officials. Puerto Rico does have a large pro-life presence and has passed recent legislation consistent with this view.
President Trump may have been referring to the 75% of Puerto Ricans on the Island who voted for Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the nation as President in a symbolic vote on Election Day in 2024.
